Paraty - Brazil

Paraty is a Brazilian municipality located on the southern coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro, 258 kilometers from the state capital, the city of Rio de Janeiro, and 267 kilometers north of São Paulo, the largest city and economic hub in Brazil.

On July 5, 2019, a portion of the territory in which the historic colonial center of Paraty and Ilha Grande, in Angra dos Reis, are located, was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, for its exceptional integration between values associated with cultural and natural heritage; thus constituting the first mixed site in Brazil.

Specific criteria presented to the World Heritage Committee led to the area being declared of importance for all humanity, since the region was formed by the exchange between indigenous, African and Caiçara cultures that are expressed in assets that use the land and sea in a sustainable way, demonstrating the interaction between man and the environment; as well as the fact that it contains important and significant natural habitats for the conservation of biological diversity.
